South Africa’s Iconic Urban Escape Cape Town

Mum always swore she didn’t have a favourite child. If we ever said Cape Town wasn’t ours, we’d be lying as much as she did. Dipping a toe into its rich heritage, trendy urban vibe, fine wining and dining, and staggering natural beauty, is the perfect ending – or beginning – to the best African safari tour.

Foodies

Thanks to its easy-going Mediterranean climate and gastronomic reputation, Cape Town enjoys a tongue-in-cheek status as Europe’s southernmost city isn’t unfair. But infuse that with Cape Malay flavour influences, some of the world’s very best new world wines and an army of internationally acclaimed culinary geniuses and it becomes an African foodie paradise. Heavy hitters like La Colombe can book up months in advance, so plan ahead. But an impromptu lamb bredie in the colourful Bo-Kaap can knock your socks off just as easily. Only 40 minutes away, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek’s best restaurants and wineries welcome you with open arms. Think lazy lunches paired with crisp wines and wide-brimmed hats, award-winning tastings, and oak-lined streets. Make sure you pack a designated driver.

Culture Vultures

Once a pivotal pitstop on the trade routes between Europe and the East, Cape Town has a fascinating history. As is its architecture, from Constantia’s Dutch gabled wineries and Long Street’s Victorian broekie lace-lined verandas, to the ultra-modern Zeitz MOCAA art museum carved out of a 1920s grain silo in the docks of the V&A Waterfront. More than just a world-class shopping destination, this gallery-lined district is also the gateway to Robben Island and Nelson Mandela’s infamous 46664 prison cell.

The Mountain

If there’s one thing the residents of Cape Town are known for (besides questionable driving and generally lacking a sense of urgency) it’s their love of Table Mountain. Looking at it, climbing it and generally wafting about in its fynbos. 600 million years old (give or take) and 2 miles wide, this is easily South Africa’s most recognised landmark. While the view from the top is totally worth the queue to get there, a hike up Lions Head promises equally stunning views – and less tourists.

Nature-lovers

Voted the most beautiful city in the world by the New York Times – and tens of thousands of others – Cape Town has a well-deserved reputation. Its iconic sandstone mountain ranges teem with wildlife, from caracals to Cape Leopards, and its two oceans (why settle for one) are filled to the brim with whales, dolphins and great white sharks. Beyond the magnificent botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch and Chapmans Peak’s dramatic views, lies the Cape Peninsula, scattered with hiking trails, laid-back surf spots and even a penguin colony at Boulders Beach. It’s not quite the tip of Africa – you’ll find that at Cape Agulhas – but it sure feels like it.

Beach Bums

For those in need of some post-safari downtime, you’re spoilt for choice with Cape Town’s countless blue flag beaches. Join the beautiful people on Clifton 4th Beach, bare your bits at Sandy Bay or hit the Camps Bay strip for a cocktail–or three. From the bubblegum-popping, lip-glossed cliques that spill out of its trendy bars and eateries, to the flocks of sunburnt holidaymakers discovering the joys of a granadilla lolly for the very first time, this is summer living personified. For a truly unique stay, consider using the iconic Blue Train as your accommodation luxury on rails that mirrors the magic of the coast.

Frequently asked Questions

Cape Town is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of city. Start with the obvious icon — Table Mountain — hike it, cable-car it, or sip a flat white while admiring it from below. Wander the colourful cobblestone streets of Bo-Kaap, get your art fix at Zeitz MOCAA, shop your way through the V&A Waterfront, and take the ferry to Robben Island for a sobering yet fascinating chapter of South African history. Round things off with a sunset drive along Chapman’s Peak and a lazy afternoon with the penguins at Boulders Beach.

Cape Town wears all four seasons beautifully, but if we’re being honest, it absolutely shines in summer! November to March gives you perfect beach days, rooftop rosé, and an absolutely buzzing vibe. Something to keep in mind is that Cape Town winters tend to be a bit wet, so if you’re pairing it with a winter safari, don’t expect warm beach days every day. There’s more than enough to keep you occupied, though!

Absolutely! Start with Cape Town’s wine bars, beaches, and foodie scene, then hop on a short flight to a Big Five safari in Kruger, Sabi Sand, or an Eastern Cape reserve. We’ll stitch it together seamlessly. You’ll be having sundowners in the bush one day, and sushi by the ocean the next.

Cape Town spoils you for choice! There’s the Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Constantia for oak-lined streets, crisp wines, and long, lazy lunches. Then there’s Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope for jaw-dropping coastal views where the oceans meet. You’ve got Boulders Beach — home to a very photogenic and adorable African penguin colony. Hermanus — a must during whale-watching season! And then there’s Chapman’s Peak Drive — possibly the most beautiful road trip on the continent.

Yes, it is safe, but like all global cities, you should keep your wits about you. We’ll match you with the best accommodation in the safest, most scenic neighbourhoods, so you never have to overthink it.

We can organise a guided walking food tour through the city where you’ll dive into local cuisine and sip on South African wine. Dive deep into the city’s layered history with a ferry trip to Robben Island — Nelson Mandela’s former prison and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit District Six Museum — a powerful reflection on apartheid-era forced removals. Walk through Bo-Kaap to see postcard-perfect streets and dive into Cape Malay heritage. Or head over to Zeitz MOCAA — Africa’s biggest contemporary art museum.

There’s obviously the iconic Table Mountain. Choose from trails ranging from breezy strolls to calf-burning climbs, or glide up in the cable car. Lion’s Head is a favourite for sunrise and sunset, with unbeatable 360° views. Kirstenbosch & Skeleton Gorge offers forested trails, waterfalls, and the famous canopy walkway. There’s pipe track, a gentler option with dreamy Twelve Apostles mountain views. If you prefer a more curated adventure, we can arrange a private hiking guide who knows all the best trails (and the perfect picnic spots).

Absolutely, it’s one of our most requested itineraries! After soaking up Cape Town’s food, wine, and ocean views, we can whisk you away to Kruger’s private reserves, Vic Falls, the Okavango Delta, or the Namib Desert, for an unforgettable safari experience.
