Frequently asked Questions
The Lower Zambezi is absolute magic. As it is one of Zambia’s less frequented parks, it feels particularly wild and untouched. The park is a pristine, river-bound eden, sprawled beneath ancient mahogany and winterthorn canopies. Across the river lies Zimbabwe’s famous Mana Pools, and together they form one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife corridors. Here, it’s all about the Zambezi itself — hippos, crocs, and elephants share the waterways, and game viewing by boat or canoe gives you a front-row seat to wild Africa doing its thing.
You’ll get to tick off lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo from your list! But the real magic here is variety and abundance. Massive elephant herds casually wade through the river shallows, buffalo parade in formidable formations, and predators lurk where you least expect them. Sunbathing crocs line the banks, while pods of hippos grunt from their river. And the birdlife is off the charts — from African skimmers to dazzling carmine bee-eaters, it’s an ornithologist’s fever dream.
The best time for game viewing is Zambia’s winter, between June and October. It’s dry season, which means water sources shrink, animals flock to the river, and game viewing skyrockets. This is also the golden window for canoe safaris: glassy water, cool mornings, and uninterrupted wildlife sightings from your silent, paddle-powered vantage point.
Lower Zambezi is an adventure playground. By day, glide silently past elephants on a canoe safari, cast a line for legendary tigerfish, or follow leopard tracks on foot. By vehicle, game drives serve up classic wildlife encounters, while boat cruises deliver sundowners with the soundtrack of grunting hippos. Few places give you this much variety.
From Lusaka, it’s a quick one-hour charter flight or a three-to-four-hour road transfer to the park gates. If you’re coming from Livingstone, hop on a scenic flight that skims over Victoria Falls before connecting to Lower Zambezi’s airstrips. Either way, the journey sets the stage beautifully!
Completely. If you’re new to safaris, Lower Zambezi delivers the “wow factor” on a silver platter. Elephant herds splash in the river, lions sprawl in the shade, and your guides bring the bush alive with stories you’ll want to retell for years. It’s wild enough to thrill seasoned safari-lovers, but gentle enough for first-timers dipping their toes into the adventure.
Why the hell not? Zambia’s parks complement each other beautifully, and short domestic flights make the logistics seamless. Start with Lower Zambezi’s river magic for water safaris, then hop over to South Luangwa for walking safaris and incredible game drives.
Yes — Lower Zambezi is considered a high-risk malaria zone, so mosquito precautions are a must. Please don’t panic, though; it’s nothing a little planning can’t handle. Most travellers take anti-malarial medication, and lodges are well-prepared with mosquito nets, sprays, and early-evening bug defences. Long sleeves at dusk, repellent on ankles, and a chilled G&T in hand — that’s the formula.
