Thrills versus frills Highlights of Zambia safari

Grab a fellow explorer and a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Highlights of Zambia safari includes the upper and lower Zambezi as well as the birthplace of the walking safari, the leopard-laden Luangwa. Along the banks of Zambia’s great rivers, you’ll find more thrills than frills, and an unapologetically authentic African safari experience.

Just a stone’s throw from Victoria Falls, you’ll pack quite a bit into your first two days – from lunching on Livingstone Island to visiting a local village and, of course, the main attraction itself: the world’s largest curtain of falling water. Then it’s up and off to the slower stretches of the Lower Zambezi for a riverside safari among the elephants that’ll charm the pants off you. Put them back on. Highlights of Zambia safari has more to be seen and done in the Luangwa Valley, including days walking through the Zambian bush and nights gazing up at stars by the billion.

Highlights

  • Close-up views of Victoria Falls and its rainbow mists.
  • Explore a local village for a taste of the Zambian way of life.
  • Canoeing, game-viewing and booze cruising along the Zambezi.
  • Listening to elephants feeding on seed pods just outside your room.
  • Walking safaris, day and night game drives and boat rides along the Luangwa River.

Cool & Unusual

  • Book an excursion to Livingstone Island, perched on the edge of Victoria Falls with water rushing past you as it tumbles into the gorge below (seasonal).

Break it down Itinerary overview

As you step off the plane in Livingstone, you’ll be met by one of Zambia’s many, many friendly faces, who’ll whisk you away to the magnificent Thorntree River Lodge on the banks of the river. You’ll have a full day to explore Victoria Falls and all it has to offer. After a guided tour you'll have the option to visit Livingstone Island. Pack your swimsuit for a thrilling dip in Devil’s Pool situated on the precipice of the mighty falls and take it all in as water cascades over the edge on either side of you (seasonal).

Today you’ll head north-west to the Lower Zambezi National Park. Here, where the Zambezi almost imperceptibly slows down, so will you. You’ll spend three unapologetically authentic Zambian days at Old Mondoro beneath a canopy of winterthorn trees. You’ll track big cats and wild dogs by day, and watch elephants snacking on seed pods over brunch. Paddle a canoe up the river at sunrise and booze cruise down it at sunset.

You’re off to the wild and wonderful South Luangwa, where your adventure peaks in the gorgeous surrounds of Mchenja. Over the next three days, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the legendary Norman Carr through the Valley of the Leopards. You’ll track big cats on a walking safari (pack a pair of sturdy shoes), and watch elephants crossing the river from your huge feather bed. And you’ll get to sleep out under the stars in one of the most thrilling nights of your life.
