Livingstone. Hot. Dusty. Colourful. A classically African town then. The ‘other’ gateway to the Victoria Falls, the approach road to this natural wonder – the T1, not unsurprisingly named Mosi-oa-Tunya – might be the most thrilling you ever drive. Your heartrate already starts preparing for the adrenaline to come as you spot that famous cloud – cataractagenitus, because yep, waterfall clouds have their own genus. But don’t just race to the obvious. Spend time exploring the Livingstone. Soak up its unique red-dirt charm. And save some cash for the market at the Falls. ‘I came home from my African adventure without a hand-crafted trinket’, said nobody ever. Unlike the Scottish missionary-explorer who named the Falls for his monarch, Livingstone never gets old.

Frequently asked Questions
While the Falls are the main attraction, Livingstone has plenty to keep you busy. There are Zambezi River cruises, which will take you on wildlife-spotting mornings and champagne sunsets. Visit the markets and craft stalls to stock up on baskets, textiles, and goodies to remind you of your time here. Go on a cultural tour to meet local artisans and explore traditional Lozi and Tonga heritage. It’s the perfect mix of adrenaline, wildlife, and local culture.
- Peak flow: Feb–May — The Falls are thunderous, spray rises high, and you’ll probably get drenched (pack a poncho!).
- Best views: Jun–Aug — Water levels drop slightly, giving you clearer views of the rock face and rainbow-filled gorges.
- Dry season: Sept–Dec — Lower flow, but you can swim in the Devil’s Pool above the Falls! Bucket-list bragging rights unlocked.
Livingstone is super laid-back, river-facing lodges, fewer crowds, and a relaxed vibe. Perfect for those who want a slower pace with plenty of room to breathe. Victoria Falls town is busier, livelier, and closer to more viewpoints — ideal if you want restaurants, nightlife, and energy.
If you came for the adrenaline, Livingstone delivers! There’s white-water rafting on the Zambezi, and microlight and helicopter flights that will have you soaring above the Falls for insane aerial views. For the true adrenaline junkies, you can bungee jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge or swim in Devil’s Pools on the very edge of the falls.
The dry season (July–Oct) is prime time. As water sources shrink, large herds of elephants gather along the Zambezi’s banks to drink, bathe, and cross between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Sunset cruises during this time often deliver incredible close-up sightings right from the boat.
Absolutely. Sunset cruises on the Zambezi are a Livingstone essential! Watch elephants drinking at the banks, hippos grunting below, and birds skimming the water, all with your beverage of choice in hand, of course!
There are direct flights into Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) from Lusaka (1 hr), Johannesburg (2 hrs), and other hubs. If you’re in Victoria Falls town and want to cross over to this side, it’s a quick border crossing — less than 30 minutes by taxi or transfer.
Absolutely — in fact, it’s one of our most popular safari-and-city combinations. Start in Cape Town, spend a few nights soaking up wine country, Table Mountain views, and beachy sunsets. Fly to Livingstone (a short flight via Johannesburg), which brings you to Victoria Falls for 2–3 nights of waterfalls, Zambezi sunsets, and adrenaline. And end it off in Botswana! A quick hop to the Okavango Delta for mokoro safaris, lagoons, and luxury camps. What more could you ask for?
