Wildebeest Migration

The Great Migration is the annual, cyclical movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest (with zebras and gazelles in tow) across East Africa’s Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Primarily in search of fresh grazing land and water following the seasonal rains, the wildebeest make a clockwise loop through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. It’s so massive, you can see it from space. The drama — births, river crossings, hunts, and endless movement — plays out year-round.

The herds are always on the move, but each season offers a different kind of magic:

• Jan–Feb (Southern Serengeti): Calving season — 8,000 wildebeest born daily, predators everywhere.
• Mar–May: Green, beautiful, and quieter. Rains mean fewer visitors, great for photographers.
• Jun (Western Corridor): Herds cross the Grumeti River — crocodile ambush central.
• Jul–Oct (Northern Serengeti): The famous Mara River crossings — drama, chaos, and dust.
• Nov–Dec: Short rains return, and the herds loop south to start the cycle again.

If you want the classic river-crossing action, you’ll need to go bewteen July–Sept. It’s not an exact science and river crossings are never guaranteed. We would opt for a mobile migration camp to get close to the action, expereince the vastness of the herds, and to escape the crowds.

• Calving season (Jan–Feb): The southern Serengeti turns green, wildebeest drop their calves, and predators prowl the edges. It’s dramatic, raw, and much less crowded.
• River crossings (Jul–Sept): In the north, the herds brave crocodile-filled waters, chaos erupts, and dust hangs in the air. It’s spectacular but busier, with vehicles gathering along the banks for front-row seats.

Calving is intimate drama, river crossings are adrenaline-fuelled chaos. Both are extraordinary.

The Northern Serengeti is the place to be from July to October. The herds gather on the riverbanks, hesitating for hours — sometimes days — before one brave wildebeest takes the plunge and chaos follows. Kenya’s Maasai Mara also offers crossings, but on a smaller scale, with more vehicles crowding the banks.

The Serengeti is larger, wilder, and hosts the lion’s share of the migration. Fewer crowds (the exception is the river crossings), a bigger variety of landscapes, and multiple migration highlights beyond the Mara crossings. The Maasai Mara is smaller and busier but amazing for August–Sept crossings and a higher chance of “front-row” drama.

For the full migration experience, we often suggest a combo — Serengeti + Maasai Mara — especially in September, when herds straddle both sides of the river.

There are two main types. Mobile migration camps move seasonally to stay with the herds, giving you front-row action without the crowds. Permanent camps are luxurious, stylish, and scenic, but you may need longer drives to reach the herds at certain times. For serious migration chasers, mobile camps are the insider’s secret weapon.

For peak season (July–Sept), we recommend booking at least 12–18 months ahead — the best camps sell out fast. For calving season (Jan–Feb) or quieter months like June and November, 6–9 months is usually fine. Last-minute trips are possible, but the closer you book, the more limited your camp choices.

Absolutely. The migration is basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for predators. Lions stalk the edges of the herds.
Cheetahs sprint after newborn calves. Crocodiles lie in wait at river crossings. And hyenas and jackals clean up the chaos. Wherever the wildebeest go, predators follow, and drama isn’t far behind.
