Setting the Scene
Yes, a quiet Serengeti safari experience is possible! Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is in the west of the national park, a blissfully less-visited area, but with prime wildlife spotting that’ll knock your khaki socks off. And there’s a resident family of hippos. Seriously, what more could you want?
Nesting Arrangements
On the banks of a Grumeti River tributary, the lodge has 10 light-filled suites, including a two-roomed family unit, with wooden framing, canvas walls and ceilings made of woven banana fibres. Inside, there’s plenty of room to starfish out on the huge beds. Glass doors open fully to a large terrace, where a plunge pool awaits after a morning out and about. Spotted something on the other side of the river? Grab the Swarovski binos to investigate further (why is it always just a log?).
The Secret Sauce
Spend the hours between drives snoozing on your terrace, having an in-room massage or getting the blood pumping in the gym. If you want to cool off, bear in mind that hippos don’t share nicely, so it’s best to keep to the lodge’s infinity pool – from there you can safely take a gander at the river horses in their own watering hole. Otherwise, you’ll have plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities on twice-daily game drives (or a hot air balloon flight if you’re feeling fancy). You’ll often see big prides of lions hanging around herds of antelopes and gazelles, and, of course, the wildebeest migration crew if you’re visiting in season.
