The Best of Both Worlds Bush & Beach in Mozambique

Combining two Southern African highlights, this 10-night adventure is equal parts adventure and relaxation. Like a fine wine, good trips need time to breathe – which is why we’ve dedicated five whole nights to each destination.

First up is a safari at the iconic Gorongosa National Park, where 20-odd years of restoration efforts have helped the park and its people bounce back from the effects of a long civil war. It’s one of the most gobsmackingly interesting safari destinations on the continent – yes, the wildlife and landscapes are incredible, but investments in education, farming, health and science add different dimensions to the experience. Holistic conservation for the win.

In part two, we’re heading to the beach for a solid dose of downtime. Surrounded by white sands and sparkly sea, Benguerra Island is just off the coast of Mozambique. We keep the itinerary loose here – you can cram in every available activity, from seahorse snorkelling to coastal kayaking, or just use these days to kick back in your beach villa, slurp some cocktails and read your book.

Highlights

  • Become a pangolin guardian for the day and go for a stroll with one of the most endangered (and adorable) animals in the world.
  • Visit Gorongosa’s E.O Wilson Biodiversity Lab to see groundbreaking research in action.
  • A heli flip over the mind-blowing blues of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
  • A rare opportunity to snorkel with teeny tiny sea horses!
  • Watching the sun set on the Indian Ocean while having a beach dinner.

Cool & Unusual

Gorongosa National Park is one of the most interesting, least-visited and quietly remarkable safari destinations in Africa — and we don’t say that lightly. Twenty years ago, it was a civil-war casualty. Today, it’s one of the boldest conservation success stories on the continent!

Break it down Itinerary overview

Our journey starts in Johannesburg, South Africa – the region’s biggest international travel hub. From here, it’s a one-hour, 40-minute flight to coastal Beira in Mozambique. At 2 pm, you’ll take a charter flight inland, touching down in Gorongosa National Park, where you’ll check in at Muzimu Lodge – the park’s flagship, six-tent camp. Take a breather – have a power nap, shower and freshen up, or just relax on the deck. Then it’s time for your first game drive. Explore some of the park, watch the sun go down over a G&T or two, and return to camp for dinner and a well-deserved early bedtime.

Gorongosa’s a great example of how protected areas should benefit every part of nature – including people. This morning, on foot or by bike, you can visit initiatives run by the Gorongosa Restoration Project, learning about primary education, empowerment groups for girls, and sustainable farming, including beekeeping. After lunch back at camp, you’ll have time for a rest before the afternoon game drive.

Option two: a full-day jaunt to Mount Gorongosa, just outside the park’s boundaries, exploring the rainforested slopes, coffee project, and the glorious Murombodzi waterfalls (new profile pic loading). You’ll be back at Muzimu Lodge in time for sundowners.

Today’s all about the wildlife. Pack up your gear – which will be whisked off to your next camp – before heading out to track lions, visit the elephants and spot crocs (reptiles, not shoes – if you find the latter, you’ve wandered into the camp kitchen by mistake). You’ll combine game drives with bush walks to see as much of Gorongosa as possible. Lunch is a picnic in a shady spot. After a full day out and about, you’ll arrive at your new pad, the ten-tent Chicari Camp, for sunset cocktails around the campfire.

Gorongosa is a hub of scientific research with its own lab – the E.O. Wilson Science Laboratories - which you can visit today to hear about groundbreaking discoveries made by researchers working in the park. You’ll also have the opportunity to join the Pangolin Guardians for a stroll with their scale-clad, termite-munching charges. They monitor rescued pangolins – the most trafficked mammals after humans – as part of a conservation project. The rest of the day is for lunch, maybe a safari cat nap, and an afternoon game drive with sundowners in the bush.

As it’s your last full day in Gorongosa, a classic safari itinerary seems apt. Start with a game drive or bush walk before lunch at Chicari Camp, then spend the afternoon at leisure (we recommend keeping an eye on the pan in front of camp – you never know what kind of creatures might turn up). Then it’s back out for one last game drive before dinner at camp.

Your flight to Beira leaves mid-morning, so you’ve got time for a leisurely brekkie in camp. From Beira, you’ll connect onto a quick Safari Air charter flight to Vilanculos, where you’ll take a helicopter transfer to the white-sand shores of Benguerra Island like the VIP you are. Azura Marlin Beach is your home for five nights. Settle into your beach villa and enjoy a chilled sunset dhow cruise to set the tone for the next few days.

For your first full beach day, you might be keen to head out and explore – or just take it easy. That’s a choice you have every day here at Azura. If you’ve got itchy feet, we can plan a day of island hopping, visiting Bazaruto Dune and Pansy Island, with a spot of snorkelling over 2-Mile Reef and a beach picnic barbecue to finish off. Otherwise, you’re free to dive into some deep downtime.

Today, you could pop down to Peri Peri Beach Club, where you can borrow a kayak or paddleboard for some water-based meandering – equipment hire is included in your rate at Azura Marlin Beach. You might spend the afternoon getting pampered in the spa, and later we can organise a private beach dinner for you.

Snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing are just some of the (extra cost) activities you could do today. Keen anglers can charter a fishing boat and try their hand catching black marlin, wahoo, barracuda or giant trevally, while there are snorkelling and diving trips to 2-Mile Reef and other sites, depending on your experience level.

Optional antics for today include a guided drive around the island’s dunes and lakes, followed by a snorkelling session and a chance to spot teeny seahorses in the shallows. It’s your final day in Mozambique, and the afternoon is all yours. Enjoy your villa, before moseying onto the beach to witness that killer Indian Ocean sunset one last time.

Linger over one last beachside breakfast before your heli transfer back to Vilanculos. From here, there are direct flights to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International, where you’ll check in for your flight home and start sifting through the millions of photos in your camera roll.

Frequently asked Questions

The sweet spot is May to early November. Gorongosa’s dry season (April/May–November) makes for the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes, while Benguerra enjoys warm, dry weather and calm seas during the same months. Humpback whales visit Benguerra from June to November — an unexpected bonus if you time it right. Gorongosa typically closes during the wettest months (mid-December to March).

The gateway is Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. From there, a one-hour and forty-minute commercial flight takes you to Beira in Mozambique, followed by a charter flight inland to Gorongosa. Between destinations, you’ll fly from Beira via Vilanculos, where a helicopter transfer whisks you to Benguerra Island. It sounds like a lot; it really isn’t, and every leg is part of the adventure.

Yes, for the regions covered on this itinerary. Gorongosa (central Mozambique) and Benguerra Island (in the Bazaruto Archipelago, to the south) are both well-established, well-secured tourism destinations with no active security concerns. The insurgency often reported in the news is confined to Cabo Delgado province in the far north — over 1,000 kilometres from anywhere you’ll go on this trip.

It is best to speak to your GP or a travel clinic well before your trip to discuss anti-malarial medications. On the ground, lodges provide mosquito nets and repellent, and covering up at dusk is always a sensible precaution.

Gorongosa’s wildlife has bounced back spectacularly since the park’s restoration began. Expect lions, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, sable antelope, waterbuck, and a bird list that runs into the hundreds. African wild dogs, reintroduced in recent years, are increasingly spotted. You’ll also get to walk with rescued pangolins as part of the park’s Pangolin Guardian programme — something very few safaris can offer.

Scale, privacy and purpose set Gorongosa apart. Just three main camps cover the entire park — where Kruger and the Serengeti have dozens between them — which makes for a genuinely intimate safari with fewer vehicles at sightings and the feeling you’ve got the park largely to yourself. The landscape is varied, too: savannah and floodplains one day, rainforested mountain slopes and the glorious Murombodzi waterfalls the next. And the experience goes far beyond the wildlife — you’ll visit the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory, walk with rescued pangolins as part of the Pangolin Guardian programme, and see community initiatives in education, farming and beekeeping at work. Conservation and scientific research are deeply intertwined in your Gorongosa experience.

Yes, with a couple of notes. Azura Marlin Beach has larger villas — the Beach Villa Grandes — with extra sleeping space for kids, and Benguerra’s gentle waters make it ideal for family beach time. Gorongosa welcomes families, though some activities like bush walks have minimum age requirements (usually 12+). The Gorongosa portion can be tailored to make sure everyone is age-appropriately entertained.

Absolutely — every Hidden Africa itinerary is built bespoke. We can adjust length, lodges, activities and extras to match what you’re celebrating. Honeymooners often add private beach dinners, spa treatments and sunset helicopter flips at Benguerra. Tell us the occasion and we’ll shape the trip around it.
