Frequently asked Questions
Kafue is huge, wild, and wonderfully untamed. It’s Zambia’s oldest and largest national park, yet one of Africa’s least explored. With far fewer roads than visitors, it feels like a true frontier safari: wide open spaces, riverine woodlands, seasonal floodplains, and not another vehicle in sight. This is safari without the traffic jams, where the wild still rules and sightings feel truly personal.
Yes, Kafue is a Big Five park, but its real magic lies in diversity! Looking to see big cats and predators? Here you’ve got lions, leopards, wild dogs, and Kafue is one of the few Zambian parks where cheetahs roam. You’ll see rare antelope like sitatunga, red lechwe, sable, roan, puku, and oribi — species you won’t often find elsewhere. And if you’re into birding…Kafue is home to over 500 species! Birder paradise.
The dry winter season (June–Oct) offers peak game viewing, especially in the Busanga Plains, when floodwaters recede and wildlife gathers in huge numbers.
Space and solitude — Kafue is wilder, less developed, and sees far fewer vehicles. Diversity of habitats — open plains, swamps, forests, and rivers means a huge wildlife variety. Rare species — Cheetah, sable, sitatunga, and wattled cranes are much harder to find in other parks. Adventure factor — It’s untamed, unpredictable, and feels like African safaris before the crowds arrived. For travellers craving something off-the-beaten-path, Kafue is one of Africa’s last great frontiers.
From Lusaka, it’s a 4–5 hour drive to the park’s eastern gates or a short charter flight directly into one of Kafue’s airstrips. From Livingstone, it’s around a 6-hour drive or a quick fly-in option if you’re combining it with Victoria Falls. Once inside, distances can be vast — so we often recommend flying into camps, especially if visiting the Busanga Plains.
Busanga Plains is a seasonal safari hotspot famous for floodplains, predator action, rare bird sightings, and vast herds of antelope. Open from July to October — it’s the crown jewel of Kafue. Southern Kafue offers year-round wilderness with denser bush, river-based safaris, and a wider range of habitats. For first-timers, a combo of Busanga and southern Kafue gives the best of both worlds.
Absolutely! They are a must, in our opinion. Go on a walking safari and track big game on foot, learn to read spoor, and experience the bush the best way you can! Venture out into the dark on a night drive to spot lurking leopards, civets, aardwolves, and other nocturnal specialists. Because Kafue is less crowded and highly conservation-focused, these activities often feel more private and immersive than in busier parks.
Yes — and it makes for a phenomenal itinerary! Pair Kafue’s open floodplains with South Luangwa’s leopard-rich valleys and world-class walking safaris. Or, just a few hours from Kafue, hop over to Livingstone to see one of the world’s greatest natural wonders — Victoria Falls. For a quieter, off-the-beaten-path Zambian safari circuit, combining Kafue, South Luangwa, and Vic Falls is unbeatable.
