Frequently asked Questions
Yes — Madikwe is 100% malaria-free, making it one of the best choices in South Africa for young or multi-generational families and travellers who want worry-free safaris without compromising on wildlife diversity.
Madikwe is Big Five country — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and both black and white rhino. But that’s just the start. It’s one of the best places to see wild dogs! Cheetah, hyena, and jackal also roam the plains. Over 350 bird species soar above, which is an absolute treat for the twitchers!
Madikwe is completely malaria-free, smaller, with fewer lodges, and no day visitors; as a result, sightings feel extra private and unhurried. Greater Kruger & Kruger Park are much larger, with higher wildlife densities, but they can feel busier. Kruger also offers more varied terrain and a broader selection of camps and lodges. If you’re after seclusion, privacy, and worry-free safaris, Madikwe is a brilliant alternative to the Kruger area, especially for families and first-timers.
Madikwe was once stripped bare farmland — until one of the largest wildlife relocation projects in Africa transformed it into the thriving reserve it is today. Over 8,000 animals were reintroduced during “Operation Phoenix,” including elephant, cheetah, rhino, and wild dog. Today, Madikwe is a living conservation success story, proving what’s possible when land is restored and protected.
The dry winter months (May to September) offer peak game viewing. Cooler weather, sparse vegetation, and wildlife gathering around waterholes make sightings spectacular.
Yes, they’re an absolute highlight! Head out on a walking safari for an intimate look at tracks, plants, and smaller creatures often missed on game drives. Or, explore after dark on a night drive. Search for leopards, hyenas, owls, and other nocturnal predators. Both experiences are guided by highly trained rangers, ensuring a safe, fascinating, and unforgettable experience.
From Johannesburg, it’s a 4.5-hour drive or a 1-hour scheduled flight to Madikwe’s airstrip. From Cape Town, direct flights connect via Johannesburg, or opt for a 2-hour onward hop to Madikwe.
Absolutely! Madikwe’s luxury camps that offer to die for private suites, starlit dinners, and secluded decks make it a perfect honeymoon destination. Combine intimate game drives with spa treatments, fine wines, and long afternoons watching elephants from your plunge pool — safari romance at its finest.
