Two Worlds, One Safari

Malaria-free, Big Five and just an hour’s flight from Johannesburg, Madikwe is where bushveld meets Kalahari, and wild dogs steal the show.

Not far from Joburg, tucked up against the Botswana border on the fringes of the Kalahari, this diverse, malaria-free reserve is one of South Africa’s best-kept safari secrets. Whether you fly in (it’s just an hour from Johannesburg) or take the scenic road, you’ll certainly have to be dragged out of Madikwe.

Madikwe sits right where the bushveld meets the Kalahari’s red-sand thornveld, and it gets the best of both. Two worlds, two sets of wildlife, one very lucky safari-goer. You might find lion and elephant in leafy bushveld one moment, then desert specialists on the Kalahari plains the next.

Once a tract of mismanaged farmland, stripped bare of almost all its natural resources, Madikwe is one of the continent’s greatest conservation success stories. Thanks to Operation Phoenix, a seven-year relocation project that brought in more than 8,000 animals of 28 species, it rose from the ashes to become one of the best places in South Africa to see the Big Five, and a whole lot more. Make that the Super Seven: cheetah and the endangered African wild dog join the party, and Madikwe is one of the best places in the country to see wild dogs on the hunt.

Unlike many other reserves, where you’re confined to a smaller private concession, a safari in Madikwe gives you the run of the entire place: 75,000 hectares of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, cheetah and wild dog, just begging to be found. With no day visitors allowed, you’ll share it with very few others.

The historic road through Madikwe was once a famed thoroughfare for explorers, hunters, traders and missionaries. And it’s believed the spirit of the great Matabele King, Mzilikazi, still roams it today.

Frequently asked Questions

Yes — Madikwe is 100% malaria-free, making it one of the best choices in South Africa for young or multi-generational families and travellers who want worry-free safaris without compromising on wildlife diversity.

Madikwe is Big Five country — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and both black and white rhino. But that’s just the start. It’s one of the best places to see wild dogs! Cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals also roam the plains. Over 350 bird species soar above, which is an absolute treat for the twitchers!

Madikwe is completely malaria-free, smaller, with fewer lodges, and no day visitors; as a result, sightings feel extra private and unhurried. Greater Kruger & Kruger Park are much larger, with higher wildlife densities, but they can feel busier. Kruger also offers more varied terrain and a broader selection of camps and lodges. If you’re after seclusion, privacy, and worry-free safaris, Madikwe is a brilliant alternative to the Kruger area, especially for families and first-timers.

Madikwe was once stripped bare farmland—until one of Africa’s largest wildlife relocation projects transformed it into the thriving reserve it is today. Over 8,000 animals were reintroduced during “Operation Phoenix,” including elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, and wild dogs. Today, Madikwe is a living conservation success story, proving what’s possible when land is restored and protected

The dry winter months (May to September) offer peak game viewing. Cooler weather, sparse vegetation, and wildlife gathering around waterholes make sightings spectacular.

Yes, they’re an absolute highlight! Head out on a walking safari for an intimate look at tracks, plants, and smaller creatures often missed on game drives. Or, explore after dark on a night drive. Search for leopards, hyenas, owls, and other nocturnal predators. Highly trained rangers guide both experiences, ensuring a safe, fascinating, and unforgettable time.

From Johannesburg, it’s a 4.5-hour drive or a 1-hour scheduled flight to Madikwe’s airstrip. From Cape Town, you can fly via Johannesburg, or take a 2-hour onward hop to Madikwe.

Absolutely! Madikwe’s luxury camps, which offer to-die-for private suites, starlit dinners, and secluded decks, make it a perfect honeymoon destination. Combine intimate game drives with spa treatments, fine wines, and long afternoons watching elephants from your plunge pool — safari romance at its finest.
