Setting the Scene
Halfway up the Namibian coast is Swakopmund, a town of German colonial architecture flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and desert dunes. It’s a popular layover for multi-stop adventures and a genuinely good excuse to stop moving for a bit. The Strand Hotel is where to nest for a night or two – ocean views galore, a seafood restaurant, a proper German beer bar, and a spa built for muscles that have just discovered what sandboarding does to a body. You could easily never leave the hotel and still call it a win. But there’s plenty nearby if you fancy it, from beaches to museums, and causing mischief in the dunes.
Nesting arrangements
The 125 rooms are sensibly dressed in oceanic shades of pale blue and grey, with colourful cushions and bed runners to break up the colour scheme, plus wooden furnishings from the rich-brown desk to the white, slatted wardrobe doors.
Opt for a sea view and wake up to the Atlantic being its moody, tempestuous self. Some rooms have balconies, so you can have your first coffee out in the salty sea air. If you haven’t used it as a clothes-dumping zone, you could curl up in one of the brown leather armchairs; some rooms have couches, too.
Food philosophy
Breakfast happens at the Farmhouse Deli, and it doesn’t hold back — pastries, pancakes, a full English, eggs benedict, the works. It stays open for lunch and dinner too, swinging from pulled pork sandwiches and pasta verde to peri-peri chicken and lentil curry, because apparently nobody could agree on one cuisine and just went with all of them. Ocean Cellar has the sea views to match its seafood credentials: sushi, oysters, fish tacos, the lot.
For a beer, Brewer & Butcher does a solid German-esque impression. For a cocktail with a view, the Welwitschia Lounge has the ocean covered. And when you need a coffee or snack without the ceremony, Café Mole on the beach will sort you out.
Secret sauce
Who doesn’t love a seaside hotel? Even better, when it’s surrounded by lots of things to see and do. Strand Hotel is on Swakopmund’s Mole – a seawall built in 1899 that now forms a triangular area jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. This means ample views of the water from the hotel’s rooms, bars and restaurants.
Strand Hotel is between the Swakopmund Public Beach and Palm Beach, so it’s easy to pop out for a barefoot morning stroll along the sand. There’s no shortage of places to eat on site, but it’s worth knowing there’s life beyond the hotel too.
Next door is the Swakopmund Museum, for anyone keen to know how this strange little seaside town came to be. And directly across the road stands the 1902 Swakopmund Lighthouse, complete with its own restaurant, too.
One more thing…
Feeling a little travel fatigued? Head to Strand Hotel’s Atlantic Spa, where a massage therapist might use hot stones to ease muscle tension or dried, hollowed-out calabashes to target your knottiest spots. You could get a sea salt exfoliation treatment or a “Heart of the Ocean” facial, plus the usual spa services, from waxing to manicures. The wellness centre also has a gym, if you prefer a more active style of relaxation.
