Setting the Scene
Robinson Crusoe may be an overused travel trope, but if there were ever a Robinsonade retreat, this would be it. Masoala Forest Lodge feels less like a lodge and more like somewhere you accidentally wash up and decide to never leave.
Hidden along Madagascar’s wild north-east coast, adventure begins long before your toes touch the sand. A flight pops you over to Maroantsetra, where your noble steed, Bluefin, awaits. From here, you’re whisked across coral reefs and the humpback highway of Antongil Bay until bluefin’s belly finally scrapes the sands of the Masoala Peninsula. Ahead of you, you’ll see nothing but rainforest and a few jungle treehouses staring back at you. Your disbelief is entirely valid.
Wild Origins
Masoala Forest Lodge came to life when Pierre Bester discovered the Masoala Peninsula during his kayaking travels (as one does), and recognised paradise when he saw it. Over the next two decades, he and his wife, Maria, shaped a castaway retreat in one of the most biodiverse corners of the planet. Today, Masoala Forest Lodge safeguards 85 hectares of pristine rainforest between Masoala National Park and the Indian Ocean.
Nests for the Night
Just seven tented rooms sit on raised timber decks, gazing through twisting green canopies straight onto the gloriously empty beach. It takes one morning waking up to this view, and you’ll happily trade your Egyptian cotton for a night under the Masoala sky.
It has everything you need and nothing you don’t. Interiors are deliberately unfussy, designed to keep your attention firmly fixed on the wild world outside. Falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking to lemurs in the treetops? We can think of worse daily routines.
Food Philosophy
Meals at Masoala are dictated by whatever the forest and ocean decide you’re having that day. This is sea-to-table in its truest sense, freshly fished and straight onto your plate. Expect honest, hearty, no-nonsense dishes that taste all the better for where you are. And don’t get us started on the fruit – your taste buds will love you (and hate you when nothing ever compares).
Breakfast is served on a salt-crusted deck suspended above the sea. Lunch tends to blur into swims and snorkels that roll into afternoon siestas. Come evening, dinner arrives, family-style: a generous, traditional feast laced with coconut and spice, anchored by rice. Ditch the cutlery and dive in with your hands to eat like the locals. Trust us, it tastes better that way.
One More Thing
With the forest and the ocean locked in a constant tug of war for your attention, your days can swing either way. Somewhere between exploration and nothing at all, you’ll find time fills up surprisingly fast. Snorkel the reef, wander the lemur-laden forest trails, kayak mangrove-lined rivers, or drift quietly in a traditional pirogue. After dark, grab a torch and walk off your dinner in the forest, while Masoala’s nocturnal residents head out to find theirs.
When you’re ready to slip even further away from civilisation, hop aboard Bluefin and head south to Cap Masoala. Crusoe’s Cabin is proper lost-world territory. Forests in every imaginable shade of green spill straight into Gatorade-blue water, practically yelling at you to dive in. Visit the nearby Blue Lagoon, aptly named, it looks just like the movie (minus the nudity).
