With its parched clay basin, blood orange dunes, and what remains of a few ghostly camelthorn trees, Dead Vlei is every bit as haunting as its name suggests. With your own private gateway to Sossusvlei, you get a priceless head start on the tourist busses pulling in early-morning. Explore the desert on electric fat bikes (so named for their chunky tyres, not their riders), hot air balloon over the dunes, snap epic “we’ve been there!” shots, dabble in after-dinner astronomy and fall asleep under the stars, lulled by a cacophony of barking geckos.
The Little Kulala Experience
This luxurious camp has a great location with special early morning access to Sossusvlei. Entrance is via a private gate exclusively for camp residents which means you skip the main gate and the crowds. The focus is on the landscape and floating above the desert in a hot air balloon is the best way to take it all in.
