Wild Origins
If walls could talk, Akademie’s would have more than a few tales to tell (and a secret or two they’d never spill). This land has seen great elephant herds carve paths through mountains, and the arrival of French Huguenots in 1688 who, with a few vines, transformed Olifantshoek (“Elephant’s Corner”) into the Franschhoek we know today. Built around 1860, Akademie’s Oortuiging Cottage is one of the valley’s oldest surviving structures — a quiet witness to centuries of change, even serving as headquarters for the British commanding officer during the Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902. But the stories don’t stop there. Absolutely nothing lacks intention at Akademie. Lights from Christiaan Barnard’s historic heart transplant cast a glow over the Orangerie (because why not), while art deco treasures and heirlooms from iconic fashion houses add their own dash of swagger. It’s this irresistible blend of quirks, history, humour, and high design that gives Akademie its unmistakably storied atmosphere.

Food Philosophy
Served under the vine-draped patio, breakfast at Akademie is more of a feast than a meal. We still have sleepless nights thinking about how to recreate their home-roasted granola. Post-breakfast, Franschhoek’s culinary scene takes the reins. This is Disneyland for the discerning palate: one of the Top 50 restaurants in the world, eight of South Africa’s Top 100, and countless wine farm kitchens just a short stroll away. Evenings bring sunset drinks, fireside nightcaps, and jasmine-scented courtyard moments under the stars. Indulgence here isn’t optional — it’s encouraged.
