Setting the Scene

Camp Kala sits on a private reserve on the edge of Etosha National Park, known for its salt pan so vast it’s visible from space, and Namibia’s undisputed safari heavyweight. There are only four suites, which we love, and so will you. The trouble is choosing between the suite, the pool, and the hot tub — a genuine first-world crisis best solved by doing all three, ideally with a gin in hand. Should you ever peel yourself away, Etosha is right there on the doorstep: game drives across the pan, bush walks through the reserve, and a night under the stars in the camp’s Dream Cruiser, a converted vehicle that’s done more for glamping’s reputation than any tent ever has.

Nesting arrangements

Every suite is built around one non-negotiable: the waterhole view. Whether you’re in bed, on the deck, making a drink at the mini bar, plopping into the plunge pool, or wallowing in the wood-fired hot tub, you’ll have a clear view of wildlife sauntering down for a drink at the waterhole.

The decor keeps things neutral but never plain. Rattan underfoot, stone basin stands, zebra-skin rugs, porcupine quills framing the bathroom mirror (just in case you forget where you are). The space is generous enough to warrant an audible sigh of relief, or a cartwheel across the room, purely because you can.

Food philosophy

Meals happen out on the deck, overlooking the waterhole, of course. Breakfast leans fresh — pastries, juices, something cooked to order off the daily menu. Lunch is a buffet built for grazing, think: breads, salads, cold cuts, the kind of spread you pick at slowly between game drives. Dinner is where things get serious with dishes like springbok fillet or a veggie ragu, hearty enough to earn its keep after a day in the bush.

Not that anyone’s ever gone hungry on safari. Literally never. Still, there’s a help-yourself pantry in the dining area for whenever a craving strikes, cocktails on tap from the main bar, and sundowners served fireside — because watching the Namibian sky do its evening is a non-negotiable.

Secret sauce

Camp Kala sits in Onguma Private Nature Reserve, right on the edge of Etosha National Park — widely (and rightly) considered Namibia’s best wildlife destination. At its centre is the enormous Etosha salt pan, which draws in elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and a plethora of birds, with a flamingo takeover come the rainy season (November to April). Camp Kala sits by the gate closest to the pan, so you can slip in at first light, before anyone else.

Stay closer to camp, and there’s the whole of Onguma Private Nature Reserve to get lost in – traffic-free and unbothered by other vehicles. Lions and cheetahs turn up often enough to stop feeling like luck, and giraffes, rhinos and elephants make regular appearances too. Sunrise walks are their own kind of magic. Learn how indigenous peoples read the land, interpret bird calls, decipher animal tracks, and use plants for different ailments.

Then there’s the Onkolo Hide: a low-slung bunker that puts you eye-to-eye with whatever’s come to drink. Essential for photographers chasing the shot, and for anyone else who’d like to get properly close to the wild without putting life, limb, or dignity on the line.

One more thing…

The aptly named Dream Cruiser is exactly what it sounds like — a Land Cruiser that’s given up on driving and reinvented itself as an ensuite bedroom under the stars. The cabin’s been repurposed into a full bathroom, shower included, while the bed lives up on the roof, tucked behind a mosquito net with a canvas cover on standby in case the sky has other plans. The Cruiser gets parked beside a waterhole for the night, and after dinner you’ll head up to the rooftop deck to watch the sunset on the waterhole.  A radio is provided in case you need someone to sing you to sleep (or, more appropriately, for practical assistance).
