Ngala Tented Camp

Setting the scene

Tucked away on the wild western edge of the Greater Kruger, Ngala Tented Camp sits in famed lion country — as wild as it is wonderful. This is Birmingham Pride territory: a pride of eighteen lions who quite literally rule the place. Among them, two rare white lions (two of only four known wild white lions), so striking they’ll make you wish you bought that new camera.

After days of rising before dawn, bumping along dusty tracks, and scanning every bush for the Big Five (who, by the way, have a talent for hiding just long enough to test your optimism), there’s a reward waiting. Deep in the bush, the Ngala Treehouse offers a kind of luxury that feels delightfully rebellious — a glass of red, a starlit sky, and not a single Wi-Fi signal in sight. Out here, “R&R” means rest, red wine, and remembering why you came to Africa in the first place.

Wildly stylish sleeping arrangements

They may call it “tented,” but this is hardly glamping—just ask your butler. Three of Ngala’s nine tents edge the sandy Timbavati River (numbers seven, eight and nine), while the rest are tucked into dense, riverine forest, shaded and surrounded by bush. Spend afternoons on your private deck, lounging in your sala, interrupted only by birdsong.

Food Philosophy

Soulful, good-mood, happy-planet food. Breakfast is a morning feast on the camp’s main deck (and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot an elephant wandering the riverbed). Lunch is served on the deck, or as a delicious picnic on your private one, but save room for high tea. Dinner is a three-course affair, tuck into your seventeenth meal of the day, served with a delicious wine pairing.

Wild Origins

Ngala’s story began with Hans Hoheisen’s extraordinary generosity. Before his 85th birthday, he donated his land to WWF South Africa, asking Kruger National Park to keep it forever wild. This created the first private reserve managed by Kruger. Today, WWF owns it, Kruger protects it, and Ngala welcomes everyone lucky enough to stay—each stay helping fund conservation and expand South Africa’s wild frontiers.

It’s truly wild here — 15,000 hectares of fenceless wilderness bordering the pristine Kruger National Park – and shared by only two lodges. No traffic jams at sightings, no strangers in view — just Ngala vehicles, a guide, and a tracker earning every sighting. In this wild environment, consisting of Knobthorn savanna and dense Bushwillow woodland, they do work harder, but the rewards are far greater. Exactly as a wild place should be.

Also…

This is your safari, your way. Kick off your shoes in the riverbed, sip a mocha-choc-arula on your morning game drive, and let Selby’s cocktails transport you to a New York style cocktail bar. Snack on biltong, linger at the pool, and don’t skip the spa! It’s self-care with a conservation twist.
