We’ve found ‘the middle of nowhere’ and it’s extraordinary. Tarkuni Homestead is hidden in the Korannaberg mountains of the ‘Green Kalahari’ in the Northern Cape. Somehow, the memo about roughing it on safari never reached Tarkuni. Architect Adrian Davidson from Savile Row combined environmental sensitivity and exclusive luxury in a sustainable structure using local materials and textures.
Accommodating up to 10 guests in 5 private suites under a single expanse of thatch, it is perfect for extended family gatherings or groups of friends. You will make incredible memories together in this exceptional place.
Tarkuni means ‘a world apart’, and the homestead is truly, deeply unique. Every comfort is provided by both a dedicated host and a private chef. Whether it’s mac and cheese for the kids, a starlit barbecue, or fine dining at the iconic Klein Jan, mealtimes are as magical as the vast landscape that surrounds you.
With ground cover too dense to classify it as a true desert despite low precipitation, the semi-arid Kalahari is home to truly unusual creatures. A private safari vehicle – complete with guide and tracker – is yours throughout your stay. From it you might see black-maned Kalahari lion, aardwolf or meerkats one day, and cheetah, oryx or pangolin the next.
Like these shy creatures, you will shelter from the heat of the Kalahari days, emerging in the cooler hours to explore. The nearest town is called Hotazel, and there’s clue in the name; bring shorts, sandals, sunscreen and plenty of glorious time.
