Tucked along a quiet lagoon in southern Mozambique, Sussurro is where reality kicks off its shoes and sets an out-of-office email. With over 2500km of untouched coastline and the coral-rich Bazaruto Archipelago nearby, Mozambique remains one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. But Sussurro makes a pretty convincing case for telling a few friends.
Sussurro—meaning whisper in Portuguese— is a dialogue between nature, craft, and calm – spoken softly through a thoughtfulness that seeps into every corner of the place. Lucky for us, we’re fluent in eavesdropping!
On the menu? The open-plan kitchen takes its cues from the organic garden and the local fishermen. What ends up on your plate is East-African-inspired, coastal, conscious, and wildly delicious! From mangrove crab and fresh garden greens to qumbe (coconut donut) and homemade vanilla ice cream to top it all off – don’t mind if I do!
Just six private bungalows, all hand-built and gracefully positioned along the water’s edge. It’s powered by renewable energy and furnished with pieces hand-carved by Mozambican artisans or collected from sub-Saharan Africa.
Days here unspool with unbothered ease. You might set sail on a dhow at sunset, snorkel through reefs where the fish are better dressed than you, or spend the afternoon having a boozy picnic on a deserted sandbar. Better yet, island-hop through the breathtaking Bazaruto Archipelago, where the only crowd you’ll meet are pink and feathered (flamingos – if you struggle with a cryptic).
After a day of behaving suspiciously like the luckiest person alive, you’ll return to the lodge to find the resident dog draped poolside like he owns the place (he does), and a well-earned drink waiting for you at your bungalow. End off the day by sinking into a bath under a sky that, unlike Sussurro, forgot how to do moderation. What more could you possibly ask for?
