Serra Cafema isn’t just far from ordinary, it’s far from, well, just about everywhere. Peering out from a dense overhang of acacias on the muddy banks of the Kunene river, the camp is the most remote one of its kind in Africa. Meet the local Himba tribe who own the land it’s built on, cruise the river at sunset, take a quad bike for a skid, and concoct your own fairy circle theories over a fine bottle of wine (or three). It can get pretty hot in the desert. Like, hot-hot. But drape a (complimentary) wet kikoi around your neck and you’re good to go. This is social distance at its purest – and an unforgettable spiritual experience.
The Serra Cafema Experience
Serra Cafema is on Kunene River, in a riverine forest standing in stark contrast to the otherwise lunar landscape of this remote northwestern corner of Namibia. This is the best of the Kaokoveld. Activities are centered around drives to explore the various desert biomes, as well as trips to the spectacular Hartman mountains. On the river you can enjoy sunset cruises or a visit to Epupa Falls. At Serra Cafema there is a chance to meet the semi nomadic Himba people and to learn about their ways.
