A fabulous feet-on-the-ground mobile tented camp, Savute under Canvas embodies the very essence of a safari exploration. Set close to its namesake, the Savuti Channel which drains into the Savute Marsh, the area is notorious for its elephant-hunting lions.
Location
Situated to the north-east of the Okavango Delta, the Savuti Channel famously flows, then doesn’t. It all depends on tectonic activity triggered by the Great Rift Valley, which this area forms the very tail end of. Whether it’s flowing or not, the channel is a magnet for elephants in uncountable numbers, as well as plains game and their hungry predators, including lions and wild dogs.
Camp description
Creating a delightfully informal atmosphere, open-sided tents of Savute Under Canvas host the dining and lounge areas. Ideal for relaxing over siesta time, just taking in the haunting Savuti landscape over a chilled drink, or later, with a sundowner around the fire. The next morning your breakfast will have a delightfully smoky flavour after being cooked over the coals.
Rooms
Savute Under Canvas mobile tents are fitted with double or twin beds, and have their own en-suite bathrooms with separate flush loos. Throw yourself into the safari spirit under an outdoor bucket shower, and all the hot water you need. A table and chairs outside your tent entrance suggests time for a journal entry, or a spot of birdwatching during siesta time. And don’t hesitate to ask the private butler for any assistance. The absence of Wi-Fi simply amplifies the remoteness of your situation, offering precious quiet time to just take it all in.
Activities and experience
The Savute area is famed around the world as an Important Bird Area. If there’s one item you simply can’t do without it’s your binoculars, and good wildlife and bird apps. The birding here is a feast for all the senses. Game drives are supremely rewarding too, while the sunset light in this spectacular landscape provides exceptional photographic opportunities.
