Barns are so last century. Book this fantasy cow shed next time you’re in marvellous Cape Town. Hope Cottage is one of the Constantia Wine Route’s rare finds (and we mean deeply, private-lane hidden!) This slice of paradise is on the fringe of Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine farm, which has called out loudly to wine lovers for more than three centuries.
In its new life, the two-bedroom Cape Dutch-style villa peacefully overlooks Simon van der Stel’s legendary vineyards. It’s the only cottage open to guests in this area of the farm and is as close to the V&A Waterfront and CBD as it is to places like Muizenberg (Surfer’s Corner) and jewels like Kalk Bay.
The building has been completely reimagined with curated artworks, artefacts, linens, exposed original brickwork, secret Zanzibar-style niches, and loads of Africanised charm. Once rested and fed (there’s a full and stunning kitchen) take a walk to any of the neighbouring wine farms. Visit Kirstenbosch Gardens, shop, hike, tour, and sip some more. At night, indulge in the solitude with a self-catered BBQ on the patio at Hope Cottage while listening to music (which the cottage owners recommend you do at least once!). Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in the villa’s original brick fireplace or catch up around the large dining table in the glass conservatory, which provides uninhibited views and extra living space. Watch the seasons change! There’s also Apple TV, Wi-Fi, and a backup power supply.
It’s an ideal retreat while a certain quirkiness about the estate makes it feel lively and vibrant. And, guests who visit almost always make their way back! Take note of the many excellent restaurants and bars on your doorstep when you visit. La Colombe is rated one of the best and a 5-star, French-meets-Asia dining experience. It’s also TripAdvisor’s Best Restaurant in Africa and an easy 4.6km drive from your hideaway. Boundaryless, Hope Cottage sleeps four adults, but, an extra bed (ideal for a child or teen) can be set up in the study on request.
