Remote is a word you hear a lot when it comes to Namibia. And for good reason. Just two million people inhabit this Texas-sized country. The rest is desert and wildlife – two things in no short supply at the far-flung Hoanib Valley Camp. Here you’ll find just six Bedouin-style tents tucked away at the foot of the mountains. Blink and you could be on Tatooine (if it weren’t for all the giraffe). Spend your days tracking black rhino, marvelling at the herds of desert-adapted elephants and oryx, or thumbing the pages of Vanishing Kings while their royal roars rumble in the distance.
The Hoanib Valley Camp Experience
The lodge is in the Sesfontein community concession on the border of the old apartheid administrative districts of Kaokoland and Damaraland. Activities at the lodge are centred on game drives, and the most common wildlife sightings include desert-adapted elephants, giraffe, as well as the majestic gemsbok (oryx). It’s considered too far to visit the Skeleton coast for a day but combining your stay with Shipwreck Lodge will round off a truly unique experience.
