As the name suggests, Great Fish River Lodge, a little Eastern Cape hidey-hole is pretty great. The lodge sits, you guessed it, on the banks of the Great Fish River which winds through 54,000 malaria-free acres of private game reserve. It has nine spacious suites, with their floor-to-ceiling glass-doored bush views and timelessly elegant design, are some of our favourites. In Kwandwe, game drives and nature walks are the order of the day. Track black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo on foot. And long, lazy siestas in the shaded sala alongside your private plunge pool are mandatory. (Hey, we don’t make the rules.) It’s peaceful and perfect in equal measure.
