Six nest-like pods perch in the trees on the edge of Volcanoes National Park – the home of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. This is Wilderness Bisate, one of the first posh lodges that launched Rwanda’s repositioning as a solidly high-end destination when it opened in 2017.
There are several reasons Bisate’s scooped so many awards. Looking out to the Bisoke, Mikeno and Karisimbi volcanoes, the lodge is all about stunning views – outside and inside. The thatched-look (it’s actually recycled plastic convincingly masquerading as thatch), domed villas, with their leafy surrounds, really do feel like luscious nests – at least where the nest-architect in question has excellent interior design taste.
We love the thoughtful touches at Bisate. Your gorilla trek will almost definitely be muddy – so there’s a little cloakroom outside your villa in which to leave your grubby boots. And there’s a day lounge, so you can chill in comfort or shower after a trek if your flight is in the evening. All very demure, very mindful.
Bisate also has a library with a mahoosive collection of primate books – this is the best place to spend your time if you want to earn a Dian Fossey moniker by the time you check out.
Food is hearty and based local produce – think butter chicken or cassava gnocchi. On the wine front, the cellar is stuffed with South African goodies – what’s better after a long day in the misty forest than returning to a cosy fire and a warming glass of red? Two glasses, you say? Fair point.
On the practical side, Bisate is nice and close to the park’s HQ, where you’ll start your gorilla trek. In other words, that means a slightly less rude wake-up time on the morning of your primate-tracking adventure. Another gold star for Bisate!
