Dusty pink walls, squishy sofas, billowing curtains and the low flicker of lantern light—if safari had a dream sequence, this would be it. Days at Bateleur Camp are spent tracking lions; evenings, sinking into a leather armchair—a clinking, ice-cold something in hand as the gramophone crackles to life with the sound of Mozart.
The twin camps (there are nine tents in each) are in the Kishwa Concession, set in a forest on the edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve – so you have all the perks of being in a private area (fewer humans), plus easy access to the iconic Masai Mara whenever you feel like it. Inside, the tents are all pink Maasai-style check fabrics, rich brown leather and darkwood. A little touch we love: a brass bathtub under a glass roof, so you can stargaze while you soak.
Early mornings and late afternoons are for game drives – spotting big cats, wildebeest herds, and elephants. Or try a bush walk, where you can watch giraffes watching you. Learn to identify tracks and sneak up close to a jazzy little lilac-breasted roller. The pre-dawn start required for a hot air balloon flight is worth it for the epic views across the Mara plains and the Champagne bush brekkie awaiting you back on terra firma.
Spend your downtime on your deck’s sunken lounge, feet up with a frothy cappuccino. Whatever you fancy, remember your private butler is never too far away.
Otherwise, take a dip in the infinity pool (there’s one for each camp), pop into the spa tent for a massage, or get your workout done at the gym, where mirrors are mercifully replaced by views of giraffes strutting in the distance.
