Located on a breathtaking peninsula of Madagascar’s northwest coast, this place will have you feeling like you’ve stumbled into the pages of National Geographic. Anjajavy le Lodge is a concept born from a passion to serve and protect our natural world, delivering an absolute masterclass in eco-tourism. Sandwiched (deliciously) between epic coastal landscapes and a private preserved forest, the Anjajavy Peninsula offers a unique opportunity to co-exist with nature seamlessly. It is a living, breathing celebration of Madagascar’s biodiversity and communities.
A Sanctuary
What impressed us the most about Anjajavy le Lodge? Despite being everything and more, it’s not the lodge. Their conservation efforts have left us speechless (a hard task). The Anjajavy protected area is home to the first rewilding project of Madagascar’s last remaining megafauna – the giant tortoise. It has also reintroduced the Aye-Aye to the Anjajavy forest. Believed to be cursed, this peculiar creature is not as handsome as its lemur cousins. But, like us, Anjajavy le Lodge understands the value in being different! They’ve brought these guys back to the area to grow the population and, most importantly, to educate local villagers on the importance of conserving this wonderfully weird species.
The Lemur’s Eden
The magic of this place hangs thick in the air – bump into a production of prancing lemurs (6 different species), buzzing dragonflies and darting humming birds as you meander through the canopied pathways. The best part? No need to choose between remote nature and comfort – you can have your cake and eat it too. Experience mind-bending nature, and then return to a beach-front villa to live amongst the lemurs. Um, do you have room for us in your suitcase? About those villas – all 24 of them (8 being extra exclusive – music to our ears) look like they sprouted from the forests themselves: wooden with thatched roofs, weathered by the salty air of the Mozambican Channel.
Your New Extended Family
The heart of this place beats through its team, most of whom hail from nearby Sakalava villages. They’ll welcome you like a long-lost cousin, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to step into their world, immerse yourself in their culture and learn their traditions on a village visit.
Our favourite way to get to know a place and its people is through cuisine. Experience the joys of Madagascan flavour dancing on your palate and dive into seasonal feasts. Enjoy your dinner in a different pop-up location each night. Fancy a tea party? The Oasis is waiting —just be prepared for a few thousand sets of eyes to join your little soiree.
Boredom? Never Heard of Her
Ajajavy is a love letter to the weird and wonderful world of trees and rocks. From the iconic baobab, to the namesake jajavy tree, and rock formations both in the sea and on land. Wander the awe-inspiring, jagged Tsingy rock formations, or drift between the jaw-dropping islands of Moramba Bay. Sunset cruises, fishing trips, snorkelling, mountain biking, night walks… oh, and all that duty-bound relaxing you have to do.
