Frequently asked Questions
Akagera is all about variety. You’ll find the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and both black and white rhino), alongside plenty of other savanna icons. Expect giraffes browsing calmly, zebra herds, and antelope everywhere, from impala to topi. Birders will be in heaven too, with over 500 species, including the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork lurking in the wetlands.
The sweet spot is during the dry winter season from June to September. With less water around, wildlife congregates near rivers and lakes, making sightings more frequent and dramatic. That said, Akagera is beautiful year-round — the green summer season (October to May) brings lush landscapes, incredible birding, and fewer vehicles on the trails.
Akagera offers a completely different vibe from the classic East African heavyweights. Akagera is intimate and diverse — think lakes, wetlands, rolling savannah, and forests all stitched together. Plus, there are far fewer vehicles here, meaning you get luxury safaris without the crowds.
Yes, and it’s one of Rwanda’s best success stories. Once depleted of wildlife, Akagera’s conservation efforts have brought back the Big Five. You can spot white rhinos roaming the plains, watch elephants grazing, and track lions as they stretch out under acacia trees before a night of hunting. It’s proof that restoration, when done right, really works.
Akagera is more than a drive-through safari. There are boat safaris for up-close hippo and crocodile encounters; birding expeditions; night drives to track predators under starlit skies; walking safaris led by expert rangers; and private sundowner setups.
Akagera is about a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali, making it one of the easiest parks in East Africa to reach. We arrange transfers, whether by private vehicle or scenic helicopter flights, for those who’d rather swap dusty roads for aerial lake-and-savannah views.
Absolutely! Pair Akagera’s savannah safaris with Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, or with Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee encounters and canopy walks. It’s the ultimate way to experience Rwanda’s diversity — from misty rainforests and volcanic peaks to lakeside luxury and open savannahs.
Of course! After your time spent in Rwanda, why not head over to neighbouring Tanzania or even Kenya? And after that, you can head to the beach if you’re in need of a beach break too.
