Frequently asked Questions
The Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld feel like Namibia turned up a notch. While the rest of the country draws you in with vast deserts and dramatic dunes, this region blends raw, untouched wilderness with a sense of eerie mystery. Picture endless stretches of wind-swept coastline littered with ancient shipwrecks, towering dunes that meet the roaring Atlantic, and inland riverbeds where desert-adapted elephants, lions, and even black rhinos roam. It’s wild, remote, and deeply soulful.
The sweet spot is between May and October (winter), when the cooler, dry season brings clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and the best wildlife sightings. Expect crisp mornings, sun-drenched afternoons, and chilly evenings — perfect safari weather.
Absolutely — this is one of the main draws. The coastline is dotted with hauntingly beautiful wrecks, many swallowed by shifting sands or battered by relentless waves. Scenic flights are the most dramatic way to spot them, but overland journeys take you right up close to a few of the most famous skeletons in the sand. Combine that with towering coastal dunes that you can hike or quad-bike, and you’ve got one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring landscapes beneath your feet.
This isn’t your typical “teeming plains” safari — this is survival on nature’s toughest terms. Think desert-adapted elephants reaching for ana pods on their hind legs, black rhinos browsing quietly along dry riverbeds, and the odd pride of desert lions roaming about. Along the coast, you’ll find Cape fur seal colonies by the thousand, with opportunistic jackals and brown hyenas never far behind. This is where coast and desert conspire in a way that is both brutal and beautiful.
Very much so! But, luxury here means location, exclusivity, and soul-stirring experiences. Remote fly-in camps blend beautifully into the landscape, offering all the comforts you need, world-class dining, and uninterrupted views of wild Namibia. The real indulgence is having some of the most untouched wilderness on the continent, often completely to yourself.
The Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld are remote and wild, and that’s exactly their charm. The northern stretches are best accessed via fly-in safaris. Not only does this save time, but it also gives you the chance to see Namibia’s extraordinary landscapes from above! Endless dunes, meandering rivers, and that dramatic meeting of desert and sea.
One of the most profound aspects of travelling through the Kaokoveld is meeting the Himba people. Nomadic and semi-nomadic, they’ve maintained their traditions for centuries, living in harmony with this harsh, beautiful land. Visiting a Himba homestead offers a rare and respectful insight into their culture, from their ochre-coloured skin treatments to their intricate jewellery and way of life. This is a chance to connect with one of Africa’s last truly traditional communities.
Yes — and it’s stricter than your average international flight. Because you’ll likely be travelling on light aircraft between lodges, most operators enforce a soft-sided duffel bag limit of 15kg (33–44 lbs) per person, including hand luggage.
